KEY FIGURES OF THE BURGUNDY VINEYARD

Sigi Hiss - Burgundy, a small French vineyard with a great reputation, can be summarised in a few figures:

27,700 hectares in production with 2 main grape varieties (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) and a total harvest volume of 1.5 million hectolitres. Burgundy is no longer a predominantly red region as some still think. The Chablis and Mâcon vineyards are dominated by white wines (61% white, 31% red). The weight of Crémant de Bourgogne is constantly growing, now accounting for 8% of the harvest compared to 4% only a few years ago.
Burgundy, with its 100 AOCs (appellations d’origine controlee), accounts for only 0.5% of global wine production (3.3% of French production) but 5% of global trade by value.
This divided nature is also true on a company level: 3,800 wine growers with an average surface area of 7.82 ha (an increase of 33% in 7 years), 250 wine merchants and 23 cooperative cellars.
