by Jane Anson in Bordeaux – Credit Agricole Grands Crus is to take an 18% stake in one of Bordeaux’s largest wine companies, Vignobles Andre Lurton, which will pass out
of 100% private ownership for the first time.André Lurton (pictured) is owner of 264 hectares of vines in Pessac Léognan, and over 300ha in Entre deux Mers and AOC Bordeaux. He was born in 1924, and will turn 88 this year.
His succession has long been a subject of discussion in the region, and the announcement last week that CA Grands Crus is to take a stake in the company will reassure observers that the company is not to be broken up. The remaining 82% of shares will remain with Lurton and his seven children.
Among the wines concerned are Chateau Bonnet, Chateau Rochemorin, Chateau La Louviere, and the Cru Classé de Graves Chateau Couhins-Lurton.

London, March 13. An opportunity to support the activities of the Foundation of the Royal Opera House led some of the world’s most important wine names to meet at the historic theater last night, invited by Sarah Kemp, Director of Decanter Magazine. Before the 250 guests Anthony Hanson MW and David Elswoood, International Head of Christie’s Wine Department, auctioned precious bottles, including Champagne Dom Ruinart, Maison Louis Jadot, Clos de Tart, Warre’s Port, Château Haut-Brion and Ornellaia. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia offered an Imperial from the 2007 vintage to the charity auction; it’s the child of an especially harmonious vintage that saw mild weather through the last days of the harvest, a factor that greatly enhanced the aromatic complexity and finesse of the cuvée. The auction raised 87,000 Pounds, with the Ornellaia Imperial contributing 8,500 Pounds to the total.

In his annual report the renowned consultant talks about the ‘unpredictable consequences’ of the incredibly hot spring, cool July, rainy August and Indian summer. Winners this year are Merlot-based wines on clay and limestone soils, Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel and clay-gravel, the botrytised sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac, and the whites of Pessac.
