by Decanter.com staff – Decanter magazine’s Decanter World Wine Awards edition hits the shelves this week – with details of over 8000 award-winning wines.
The massive, gold-covered 376-page issue of Decanter is the biggest the magazine has published. It covers the competition – now in its eighth year – in every possible detail, from the desert island luxuries of the 30 regional chairs to full articles on each of the 25 International Trophy winners.
The International Trophies – the pinnacle of the Awards – will be announced at the Decanter World Wine Awards dinner at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden on Wednesday 7 September and published on Decanter.com at midnight.
by Jane Anson in Bordeaux – Chateau Cos d’Estournel and Cos Labory have lost vines to hail as storms swept Bordeaux – with more predicted for the weekend.
Cos d’Estournel: ‘affected’ by hail Although the storms were localised, Saint Estephe and Pauillac were particularly badly hit, with estimates of up to 900 hectares of vines damaged following a short storm around 11am Friday morning.
Pessac Leognan, Grezillac in Entre-Deux-Mers, and Saint Andre de Cubzac have also suffered damage.
Bernard Audoy, owner of Cos Labory and president of the Saint Estephe appellation told a local newspaper that he had never seen the Cos plateau so badly affected, with both his vines and neighbouring Cos d’Estournel suffering loss of leaves and damage to berries.

Cabernet Franc & Co. sind eine Entdeckung, nicht nur für Liebhaber
Zwar ist die Loire Frankreichs wichtigstes Weißweingebiet und in Deutschland vor allem für ihre Schaumweine bekannt, aber auch im roten Bereich kann sie trumpfen. Cabernet Franc zum Beispiel ist an der Loire seit langem zuhause und bringt dort charaktervolle Rotweine hervor, die ihre beerig-würzigen Aromen besonders zum Essen hervorragend entfalten. Diese eigenständigen und authentischen Rotweine galten lange als Nischenprodukt, haben aber inzwischen ein paar ihrer Ecken und Kanten abgelegt und an Internationalität gewonnen. Reinsortig ausgebaut wird die genügsame Rebe vor allem an der mittleren Loire zwischen Angers und Tours, wo sie ideale Bedingungen findet.
by Panos Kakaviatos – The 400-strong union of producers in Pommard in Burgundy will apply to the French appellation authority INAO to promote the premier cru Rugiens and Epenots appellations to grand cru.
Currently in force, the 1936 classification did not classify any terroirs in Pommard at the grand cru level, but a newly drafted dossier aims to prove that these two appellations should be considered grand cru, Aubert Lefas, Pommard union president, told Decanter.com.
