Leading Beaujolais wine producer Georges Duboeuf has claimed that 2009 is “one of the best” Beaujolais vintages in the last 50 years. In his most recent harvest report, Duboeuf said the region could not have expected a better yield in terms of quality and polyphenol maturity. The quantity is expected to be close to appellation yields ranging from 43 to 48 hl per hectare.
“We have had perfect weather with 50,000 grape pickers hard at work across the 3,000 vineyards of Beaujolais since 4 September,” said Duboeuf.
The Beaujolais Nouveau vintage will be released on 19 November and, following last year’s break from tradition, will be shipped to the US via boat instead of air, in a bid to reduce the carbon footprint of shipping wine, to conserve fuel costs and to keep the cost for consumers down.
“Following last year’s unprecedented, and successful, break from tradition, the 2009 Beaujolais will once again be shipped by boat, not by air, to reduce the carbon footprint of shipping the wine and to conserve fuel costs, ensuring that retail prices are kept affordable for US consumers,” said Bill Deutsch, chairman of Georges Duboeuf’s US importer, W.J. Deutsch & Sons Ltd. “We anticipate retail prices to be lower than last year, averaging $9 to $11 per bottle.”
A number of events entitled: ‘Le Beaujolais Nouveau Est Arrivé’ will take place following the release, in New York, Miami, Las Vegas and several other locations across the US. Earlier this year 53 French winemakers accused of illegally enhancing their Beaujolais wines with sugar were faced with EUR500 to EUR7,000 in fines.
