Stuart Todd – Wine exports from France’s Alsace region fell in double digits the first nine months of 2009, according to figures obtained by just-drinks from trade body Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins d’Alsace (CIVA). Exports fell 11% in volume to 168,000hl to the end of September, down 15% in value to EUR70m (US$100.4m), against the same period of 2008.

By far the most spectacular decline was in shipments to the US, which plummeted 40% in volume and 41% in value. Each of Alsace’s top five export markets – Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and US reported falls.
Sparkling wines, the crémant d’Alsace, are not included in the figures but only represent a small proportion of exports.
