By: just-drinks.com editorial team – Exports of bottled wine from Chile rose strongly in value terms during 2010, according to recent figures from trade body Wines of Chile.
Bottled wine exports for the 12 months to the end of December rose by 12% on 2009, to US$1.27bn, Wines of Chile said today (7 February). In volume terms, exports rose by 11% to 47.3m cases.
The figures show that global demand for Chilean wine remains buoyant, despite reports that small-to-medium wineries face financial difficulties caused by Chile’s strong peso currency.
The UK was the top importer of bottled Chilean wine in value terms, claiming a 16.7% share of exports and overtaking the US, which led demand in 2009. Exports to the UK rose by 7% in value and 3% in volume during the year, while bottled exports to the US only rose by by around 2% in both volume and value.
These two countries account for around a third of Chile’s bottled wine exports by value.
Elsewhere, Chilean producers made strong gains in China, where exports leapt by around 70% in value ($37.4m) and volume (1.2m cases). There were also double-digit rises in Japan and Canada. Germany was the only ‘top ten’ importer of bottled Chilean wine to report a decrease in the value of orders during the year.
