Germany’s Ahr Valley will be the site of the 1st International Pinot Noir Symposium 24-26 February 2012. The global elite of P inot Noir producers will meet with top chefs to engage in an international exchange of ideas and to create a unique tasting experience of these outstanding wines at Bad Neuenahr’s top Dorint Hotel.

Pinot Noir is one of the truly great classic grape varieties. It produces the most elegant, the most complex and the most sensual red wines with a broad spectrum of expressions dependent upon on its terroir and winemaker style. Next to France and America, Germany is the country with the largest acreage (and sales) of Pinot Noir. We believe it is important that the leading regions producing Pinot Noir should work together within a global framework to exchange their ideas and experiences, and to present their very special products to the public. It is with this objective in mind that Germany’s International Wine Institute has created the first International Pinot Noir Symposium, to be held in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in Germany 25-26 February 2012.

Specialist lectures presented by renowned expert winemakers, journalists, merchants and sommeliers will be showing the latest trends with participants encouraged to participate in discussions. They will report on their experiences in working with Pinot Noir wines and discuss market and marketing issues. Master of ceremonies and key moderator of the symposium will be Markus Del Monego, world champion sommelier in 1998 and a Master of Wine.

The symposium’s centerpiece will be the exclusive gala evening which culminates in the presentation of the Grand Pinot Noir Award. Prominent names from the fields of politics, wine media and specialist book authors will be invited to attend and to enjoy the cuisine of Michelin-starred chef Hans-Stefan Steinheuer.

Steinheuer’s creative dishes will be accompanied by a wine intermezzo including some great Pinot Noirs such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s 2005 Echezeaux. Rounding out the program a table presentation will give both leading German and international Pinot Noir producers an opportunity to present their wines to a trade audience on the Sunday the 26th.

Zwiesel Kristallglas, producer of fine stemware, is the primary sponsor of the event. In addition to its fine wine glasses, Zwiesel will host a special showing of its range of stemware at a seminar. Symposium partners include the Ahrtal Tourism Association, Gerolsteiner mineral waters, Neue Dorint hotel chain, the German Wine Institute and the Rheinland-Pfalz Ministry for Environment, Agriculture, viticulture and Forestry.
