by Regine Lee – Christie’s will offer mixed cases of bottles from Decanter’s 2010 World Wine Awards as part of a fine wine auction this week to benefit WaterAid. WaterAid has partnered Christie’s and Decanter since 2005 through its ‘Wine into Water’ initiative, in which extra bottles of wine submitted to the World Wine Awards are auctioned to the public, with all proceeds going to WaterAid. The non-governmental organisation provides some of the world’s poorest people with access to clean water, improved sanitation and hygiene education.

Chris Munro, head of London wine sales at Christie’s said: ‘The WaterAid auction is a great opportunity to buy a selection of good quality, ready to drink wine for your cellar or to stock up for Christmas.’

In addition to the ‘Wine into Water’ offering, the sale also includes 300 lots of rare and mature French and Italian wines from private collections, including 10 cases of Château Lafite-Rothschild 2002.

Munro said, ‘Lafite is the wine of the moment, and we expect the Lafite 2002 to exceed the top end of our estimate. Outside of Bordeaux, we expect the Domaine Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 1999 vintage and the rare magnums of La Tâche Grand Cru to also be successful.’

Christie’s Fine and Rare Wine Auction will be held on November 4 at 10:30 am at their sale location at 8 King Street, St. James’s, London.
