Acker Merrall final 2010 Hong Kong sale fetches $7.95m

by Maggie Rosen - Acker Merreall & Condit's final Hong Kong auction of the year, held 10 and 11 December, achieved HK$51.2m (US$7.95m).The auction brings the New York-based retailer and auctioneer's total earnings from its six Hong Kong sales in 2010 to HK493m ($63.2m).

'We have witnessed the fastest growth of our business here in Asia,' said John Kapon, president and auction director.

Acker Merrall hosted its first Hong Kong auction in 2008, and established the city as its official Asian headquarters just before the recent sale.

Held at the Island Shangri-La and Grand Hyatt hotels, the two-day sale featured about 1,000 lots focusing heavily on Bordeaux First Growths and super-seconds. .

Of the 10 top-grossing lots, eight were Château Pétrus, many from 1982 and 1990 – including a case (1982) which realised HK634,000 and three double magnums (1990) which sold for HK$488,000.

An assortment of twelve bottles of Domaine de la Romanée Conti 1999 sold for HK$317,200.

Acker Merrall’s final 2010 auction will take place in New York on 18 December, and its next auction in Hong Kong is scheduled for 21 and 22 January 2011.
