Argentina has reported record wine exports in 2010, boosted by stronger demand for Malbec in the UK and US and also favourable exchange rates.

Argentina exported US$864.5m of wine in 2010, beating its previous record of $860m set in 2008, Wines of Argentina announced today (1 February). However, export volumes fell by 7.5% on 2009, due to lower bulk exports, said the trade body.

Stronger demand for Malbec in the UK helped to boost sales, but it was the US and Brazil that drove most of the export growth, said the group. Other markets in Latin America also performed well. Elsewhere, China overtook Japan during the year to become the biggest consumer of Argentina’s wines in Asia.

Argentina’s weak domestic currency has also played benefited wineries over the last 12 months, according to investment banking group Rabobank.
