by Adam Lechmere – The restaurant at the Yeatman in Oporto has won its first Michelin star a year after opening.Yeatman

The Yeatman is the first in Oporto to win a Michelin star – and one of twelve Portuguese restaurants to win stars in the 2012 edition of Michelin Spain and Portugal.

‘I am delighted to receive a Michelin star as recognition of the work that my team and I do,’ chef Ricardo Costa said. ‘This is the “Oscars” of the restaurant world.’

Adrian Bridge, CEO of the Yeatman’s owners the Fladgate Partnership said, ‘The Yeatman has always been an ambitious project to create a new level of experience for people who wish to visit Porto and Northern Portugal. The quality of food, paired with the best wine list in Portugal provides our guests and visitors with the greatest possible culinary experience that our town has to offer.’

The Yeatman, which opened in September 2010, is set on 2.8ha above the historic Port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, overlooking the Douro River and the city of Oporto.

The project, with its decanter-shaped pool and 25,000-bottle cellar housing the largest Portuguese wine and Port collection in the world, was begun in 2006 as part of the regeneration of Vila Nova de Gaia.

At the time, Bridge said one of the reasons such projects were made possible that Port companies were consolidating, leaving warehouses empty and freeing up space for culture, tourism and gastronomy initiatives. www.decanter.com
