by Panos KakaviatosMore than three and a half thousand bottles of Champagne bottles worth €300,000 have been stolen from acclaimed grower Jacques Selosse in a heist described as ‘well-organised’.
The Avize-based domain lost well over 5% of its average annual production in the raid on Thursday night last week.
Stolen bottles included the Initial cuvee, a blend of three vintages of Chardonnay, and Exquise, a Demi-Sec, each of which cost €57 per bottle ex-domain.
The top-of-the-line Substance Blanc de Blanc, made from multiple vintages, at €112 ex-domain, was also among the stolen bottles that had been packaged into palettes for a shipment scheduled to leave for the US and Japan today, said domaine secretary Florence Thunevin.
‘They had to be very well organised,’ Thunevin told Decanter.com. ‘They must have used trucks, but we still do not have a clue as to who they were.’ She confirmed media reports in France that the loss in value amounted to some €300,000.

by Adam Lechmere - The long-awaited court case between billionaire collector William Koch and California collector Eric Greenberg has finally started a day late.
The opening day yesterday, Tuesday, in Manhattan Federal Court, consisted of jury selection and preliminary legal arguments before Judge Paul Oetken.
Jurors were rigorously vetted by both teams of lawyers. One juror, Decanter.com understands, was dismissed because she said she was a librarian who had read books on wine, particularly a book about corks.
Koch (pictured) and Greenberg sat on opposite sides of the court with their dozen-strong legal teams.
Legal arguments as to the admissibility of certain pieces of evidence took up much of the day.
Eric Greenberg’s legal team argued that a cheque for US$272,555 that Greenberg had sent Koch, after Koch had bought Greenberg bottles for US$228,603 at a 2005 auction that he concluded were either ‘counterfeit’ or ‘possibly counterfeit’, was demonstration of his good faith and should not be admitted. Koch’s team argued that this evidence should be put before the court as Greenberg offered the refund only after Koch threatened to sue.
This trial was finally given the green light in October 2008 when a New York federal judge decided Koch was entitled to seek punitive damages from Greenberg.

Over three intense days the leading international fair for the wine and spirits sector in Düsseldorf attracted 4,783 exhibitors from some 48 countries and more than 44,000 trade visitors from throughout the world (ProWein 2012: 40,667 visitors).
Alongside a stable attendee level from Germany the number of international visitors to ProWein 2013 rose once again. A total of more than 44,000 trade visitors came to Düsseldorf from all relevant wine import markets and from all major producing countries. In particular, organisers recorded strong increases in numbers from Great Britain, Scandinavia and the BeNeLux but also from France, Spain and Italy. New visitors could also be enlisted from the New World such as North America and Asia.
