Sophie Kevany – South America wine exports see recovery. Wine exports from Argentina and Chile have seen a sales bounce that might be linked to current economic woes.

Export volumes from Chile, down in January and February, rose 21% in March and 15.5% in April, compared to last year. Value sales fell 11% for the four months, however.

Argentina’s exports from January to April, excluding wine shipped in bulk, rose 15% in volume and 3% in value. Exports from Brazil and Peru have also grown in early 2009.

“People are more value conscious and if Chile and Argentina stretch their wine dollar that’s what they want,” said Bob Guinn of California-based importer TGIC.

Guinn said Argentina and Chile are perceived to offer better value at US$6 compared to Australia, and better value at US$30 than France, Italy or US.

TGIC sells 750,000 cases of wine annually and in January to May its sales of Argentinean and Chilean wines rose 18%.
