just-drinks.com editorial team – Wine exports from South Africa have recorded a marked increase in volumes for the year to the end of May, according to recent figures.

Industry trade body Wines of South Africa (WoSA) said today (8 July) that global exports in the 12 month-period rose by 18% on the corresponding period a year earlier. Citing figures from South African Wine Industry Information & Systems (SAWIS), the organisation noted that the UK, the leading export market for the country’s wines, posted a leap of 25% year-on-year.

“South Africa is seeing growth across all price points (in the UK) and a raft of strong brands in the grocery sector are helping to give the category a significant boost,” a spokesperson for WoSA said. Germany and Sweden, numbers two and three respectively, also delivered growth, with increases of 14% and 31% respectively.

Outside Europe, exports to the US were up by 14%. In China and Japan, exports soared by 180% and 59% respectively, albeit from smaller bases. Total exports in the 12 months of 2008 just broke 400m litres, exceeding the industry’s goal to export 300m litres by 2010.

“The positive trend is set to continue, as the 2009 vintage is being hailed as one of the best quality in the last 20 years, according to leading Cape producers,” the spokesperson continued. SAWIS estimates this year’s harvest will come in at 1.3m tons, a decrease of 8.4% on 2008. Last month, WoSA confirmed that it is dropping its biennial trade fair, Cape Wine, next year to focus its funds and efforts on the FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the country in 2010.
