Panos Kakaviatos, and Jane Anson in Bordeaux – As American merchants express concern over pricing trends for Bordeaux 2009, a Bordeaux chateau representative says that the US market is being alienated. At Sherry Lehman in New York, owner Chris Adams says that there is ‘great excitement’ for the vintage but he calls the futures campaign ‘uneven’. He said that some lesser-known wines that had had good press reports had done well. ‘But my early feeling is that things are getting more dangerous, mostly because there are some chateaux that I would like to offer this year, but the way the pricing is heading, I might be passing.’
John Stimpfig – The 75th anniversary of the acquisition of Chateau Haut-Brion by the US financier Clarence Dillon was celebrated last night at the Foreign Office’s historic Lancaster House within St James’ Palace.
The dinner was hosted by Prince Robert of Luxembourg, president of Domaines Clarence Dillon and great-grandson of Dillon, who bought the Pessac First Growth estate in 1935.
Also present were winemaker Jean-Philippe-Delmas, together with 75 guests described as ‘key figures from the worlds of art, fashion and design, mingled with leading financiers and members of the aristocracy’.
Adam Lechmere, and Jane Anson – Sales of Bordeaux 2009 are ‘balanced on a knife edge’, Liv-ex has warned. The web-based trading platform, which controversially sold a case of Lafite 09 last month for £10,000 before the chateau had priced or released the wine, says in its latest market report there is ‘a very real danger Bordeaux has overestimated demand’.
Wink Lorch – Henri Maire of the Jura, one of France’s largest family-controlled wineries, has been bought by the Luxembourg-owned investment group Verdoso Industries. Verdoso has taken a majority shareholding in Henri Maire, its first purchase in the wine industry. It plans to inject capital and expertise to revitalise a business that has suffered significant losses in the past two years. Marie-Christine Tarby-Maire, Henri Maire spokeswoman and daughter of the founder, said that Verdoso was interested in the fact that 90% of the production is from its 300ha of vineyards, the largest holding in the Jura wine region.
The company is a specialist in direct sales, and Verdoso intends to invest further in this form of vertical selling, direct from vineyard to consumer. Henri Maire, who died in 2003, was considered an early wine marketing genius; he is credited with rescuing the Jura wine region from obscurity after World War Two. The company has extensive stocks of Vin Jaune d’Arbois, the legendary white wine of the region. www.decanter.com
