Quinta de Gomariz Tina Gellie in Porto – Quinta de Gomariz, in Portugal’s northern winemaking appellation of Vinho Verde, has swept the board at the region’s annual awards.

The 27ha estate in the Ave sub-region took six golds and two silvers – almost a medal for every line they made in 2009 – and all the more impressive given that Quinta de Gomariz has only been selling its wines since the 2005 vintage.

He died last week at Trinity Hospice in Clapham, south London, after being diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago. His wife Patricia and daughter were with him at the end, which they said was peaceful.

New Royal Tokaji winery to open in September

Tokaji By Rebacca Gibb

Hungary’s Royal Tokaji Company plans to double production by opening a new €3.25million winery in September. The official launch of the winery will coincide with the company’s 20th anniversary, co-founded by Decanter columnist and Decanter’s Man of the Year 1995, Hugh Johnson OBE.

The new facility will increase annual production capacity from 30,000 to 60,000 six-bottle cases, and will focus on increasing volumes of dry Furmint and a late harvest wine rather than the region’s signature style Aszu. Ben Howkins, international sales director for the Royal Tokaji Company told decanter.com ‘We see the main growth coming in late harvest and dry Furmint wines although the core of our business will always remain Aszu, as that sets Tokaji apart from the rest.’

‘There will always be a limit on Aszu – in 2001, ‘02 and ‘04 we didn’t have any Aszu at all but we can always get the volumes of Furmint and late harvest,’ he added.

With increased production, it aims to grow sales in its biggest market, the United States, plus the UK and Europe.
