Decanter: Francois Pinault buys Chateau Grillet

by Jane Anson in Bordeau – French billionaire Francois Pinault, through his group Artemis, has bought Chateau Grillet, the monopole estate in the Rhone Valley that forms its own wine-growing AOC.

Pinault, who owns Chateau Latour in Pauillac and Domaine d’Eugenie in Burgundy, alongside auction house Christie’s and Rennes football club, bought the estate from Isabelle Baratin-Canet, whose family (originally Neyret-Gachet with name changes through marriage) has owned Chateau Grillet since 1830.

Decanter: Slow Wine 2011 launched as app in English

by Adam Lechmere – Slow Wine has launched its first wine guide in English – as an app Slow Foodfor iPhone and iPad.

Slow Wine 2011 lists 8,400 wines from 1850 wineries, chosen not only on quality of wine but on the green credentials of the winery.

This is the first Slow Wine guide since the Slow Food organisation broke away from the eminent Gamberro Rosso wine guide, with which it had worked for more than 20 years.

Decanter: Arnault of LVMH worlds fourth richest

Chateau d’Yquem, is the world’s

fourth richest man, with a fortune of US$41bn, according to Forbes magazine’s Rich List.

The LVMH chief, who owns a controlling stake in Dior Couture, Tag Heuer, De Beers, Louis Vuitton and a host of other luxury names, is Europe’s richest man – and he is not the only chateau owner to make an appearance in the list.

Of the top 10 French entries, five are owners of Bordeaux chateaux.

Francois Pinault, owner of Chateau Latour, comes in at 67 globally and third in France with a fortune of US$11.5bn.

by David Furer – Alex Gambal, proprietor of Beaune negociant Maison Gambal, has purchased vines within a Montrachet Grand Cru – becoming the first non-Frenchman to own land in a Montrachet site
Gambal has bought the land from Philippe Brenot of Domaine Brenot in Santenay for an undisclosed sum: the deal comprises 3.5ha of vines in Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Santenay.
