Champagne agrees increase in yield on 2009

by Graham Tearse in Paris – Champagne growers and houses this week agreed on a 2010 harvest yield of 10,500 kilos per hectare – an increase on last year. This is up by 700 kgs/ha on 2009, following a recovery in sales this year at home and abroad.

Penedes approves icewine

by David Furer – A Spanish icewine DO has been approved for the first time. The region of Penedès has accepted the new DO Vino Dulce de Hielo or Vi Dolç del Fred. This is the first European appellation to allow artificial freezing of grapes. This is forbidden in the traditional icewine regions of Germany, Austria – and Canada – where grapes must be left to freeze naturally on the vine.

FRANCE: New president for Bordeaux wine body

Bordeaux wine trade body, the CIVB, has announced the election of Georges Haushalter as its new president succeeding Alain Vironneau. Haushalter, 50, has been the Managing Director of Bordeaux trader, La Compagnie Médocaine des Grands Crus since 2002 and is already a CIVB vice-president.

According to the CIVB’s statutes, its presidency is held alternately by a wine producer and a wine trader. Vironneau, a producer of AOC Bordeaux supérieur, had been at the helm since 2006.

The conference, hosted by Ernie Loosen, Decanter's Man of the Year 2005, and Ted Baseler, the president of Château Ste Michelle, was attended by well over 350 professionals from all four corners of the world.
