By Chris Mercer - Nomacorc is on the brink of launching new wine closures that are partially made from plant-based polymers.
The synthetic cork giant has spent the past two years honing the closure. It will be officially unveiled at the Intervitis expo in April and is currently pegged for a full commercial launch towards the end of 2013.
It will be a hybrid of plant-based polymers and oil-based plastic, tapping into a concept already being explored by several food and drink manufacturers, such as Coca-Cola Co and its Plantbottle.
These are early stages but, if successful, the launch could spark a new generation of closures that might one day cut Nomacorc‘s reliance on oil-based plastics altogether.

Mit einer geschätzten Erntemenge von knapp 2,1 Millionen hl liegt das österreichische Weinjahr 2012 deutlich unter dem langjährigen Durchschnitt, was vor allem auf den Spätfrost im Mai zurückzuführen ist, der insbesondere für Niederösterreich starke Ein-bußen mit sich gebracht hat. Die Qualität ist allerdings aufgrund des ansonsten günstigen Witterungsverlaufes durchgehend als sehr hoch zu bewerten, und zwar grundsätzlich für alle Anbaugebiete und Rebsorten. Das schöne, trockene Wetter gegen Ende der Vegetationszeit und während der Hauptlese hat dafür gesorgt, dass vollkommen gesun-des und reifes Traubengut in weiß und rot eingebracht werden konnte.

by Chris Mercer - The owner of Chateau Doisy-Vedrines has been elected president of the Crus Classés of Sauternes and Barsac.
Castéja succeeds Chateau Climens owner Bérénice Lurton, who was elected to the post in 2008 and has set about trying to change the ‘fusty’ image of sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac.
Castéja told Decanter.com his ‘main aim is to promote Classified Growths of Sauternes and Barsac to make them better known, as they should be, [and] to explain the way to drink such wines’. He said he does not see himself as a ‘revolutionary’, and will ‘follow up’ on promotional projects initiated by his predecessor.
Barsac-based Doisy-Védrines passed to Olivier Castéja from his father, Pierre, who had run the estate since 1946.However, the Castéja family lineage at the chateau can be traced back to the mid-19th Century.
