Weinliebhaber sind Genussmenschen, Genussmenschen sind Weinliebhaber. Gute Weine und gutes Essen gehören zusammen, Kultur, wie sie geschmackvoller nicht sein kann. Seit Menschengedenken ist das so und hat auch in Zeiten des allgegenwärtigen Fast Foods bestand.

Jedoch stellen Weinkarten für Gastronomen heutzutage einen erheblichen Kostenfaktor dar. Riesige Weinkeller mit allem, was das Herz des Weinliebhabers höher schlagen lässt und wie es sie vor Jahrzehnten noch zu entdecken gab, sind passe. In Zeiten, in denen Liquidität das wirtschaftliche Überleben bedeutet, können sich nur wenige Betriebe erlauben, ihre Weinkarte auch mit gereiften Gewächsen zu bestücken.

decanter.com: French study finds pesticide residues in 90% of wines

A study of more than 300 French wines has found that only 10% of those tested were clean of any traces of chemicals used during vine treatments.

Pascal Chatonnet and the EXCELL laboratory in Bordeaux tested wines from the 2009 and 2010 vintages of Bordeaux, the Rhone, and the widerAquitaine region, including appellations such as Madiran and Gaillac.

Wines were tested for 50 different molecules found in a range of vine treatments, such as pesticides and fungicides.

Some wines contained up to nine separate molecules, with ‘anti-rot’ fungicides the most commonly found. These are often applied late in the growing season.

By James Lawrence - Elkton Oregon has been approved as the latest American Viticultural Area in the US.

The US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Treasury Bureau (TTB) announced last week that the new designation in southern Oregon’s Umpqua Valley will take effect from 7 March.

Elkton Oregon AVA will encompass an area of 74,900 acres (30,351ha) currently within the northern zone of the larger Umpqua Valley AVA.

Currently, the new AVA will compose of just 5 wineries and 39ha under vine.

‘We sought an AVA for Elkton because we believe our area is so much different from the rest of the Umpqua AVA,’ Michael Landt, owner ofRiver’s Edge Winery told Decanter.com.

Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine Challenge, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles – es gibt kaum einen Weinwettbewerb, auf dem Piper-Heidsieck in den vergangenen Jahren nicht ausgezeichnet wurde. Und auch aktuell kann das Champagnerhaus aus Reims wieder zahlreiche Ehrungen verzeichnen. Das Resultat langjähriger, harter Arbeit, denn Kellermeister Régis Camus, der die Produktion seit 2002 leitet, setzt auf erstklassige Grundprodukte und konsequent hohe Qualität.

Champagne: ‘stable’ despite 14m drop

The final figure of 308.8m bottles was lower than anticipated – industry insiders had forecast a 3% fall to 314-315m bottles – following poor demand in November and December, when shipments fell by 6-7% and 8.8% respectively.

Leaving aside the lowest point of the economic crisis in 2009 – when shipments slumped to 293.3m bottles – this represents Champagne’s worst year in terms of volume since 2005.
