After a ‘mostly grey August’, September 2002 brought ‘an almost Californian warmth to the region’ Geoffroy said. Launched at the Leighton House museum in London, the former home and studio of Victorian artist Frederic Leighton, critics have described the 2002 variously as ‘airily subtle’ and with ‘plenty of underlying structure’.
The London launch was preceded by a launch in Istanbul, chosen by Geoffroy to give journalists ‘the unique experience of discovering both the city on the Bosphorus and the wine from Hautvilliers.’
Richard Brierley, head of fine wine at Vanquish wine merchants, described the 2002 as ‘Burgundian, constantly in tension like the mainspring of an ancient clock slowly unwinding itself to reveal the multi-layered depths.’

by Richard Woodard - Michael Symington CBE, who led his family’s Port business after the Second World War and helped lay the foundations for its future expansion and success, has died aged 87.

The father of current company chairman Paul Symington - Decanter Man of the Year 2012 - and his younger brother Dominic, Michael ran the Symingtons’ port business, aided by cousins Ian and James, from 1965 to 1990, elevating it to a position of prominence.
The company is now the biggest in the port trade, owning Graham’s, Cockburn’s, Dow’s, Warre’s and Quinta do Vesuvio, and is also the Douro Valley’s largest vineyard owner.
Born in May 1925, Michael Douglas Symington was the grandson of Andrew James Symington, who left Glasgow for Oporto in 1882 and began his family’s long association with the port trade.

Noch lagern die edlen Tropfen in fast 20 Metern Tiefe. Sicher verpackt in Stahlkisten, aneinandergekettet und mit einem 250 Kilogramm schweren Käfig geschützt.Seit zweieinhalb Jahren reifen eine Zwölf-Liter-Flasche und 18 Magnumflaschen Weißwein auf dem Grund des Diezer Baggersees in Rheinland-Pfalz, sind sogar zum Ausflugsziel der örtlichen Taucherbasis geworden. Ein PR-Gag des traditionsreichen Weingutes Balthasar Ress in Eltville (Hessen) – aber auch irgendwie ein Experiment. «Wir sind gespannt, was diese Bedingungen mit dem Wein gemacht haben», sagt Christian Ress, Geschäftsführer des Weingutes im Rheingau.
