The transaction was completed on December 31; the main buyer has not been named but it has been confirmed that AXA Millésimes chief Christian Seely has increased his personal stake, and will continue to run the estate, as he has done since IDI bought the property in 2004. Antonio Agrellos is to continue as consultant winemaker.
‘Christian Seely will remain managing director of AXA Millésimes and Quinta do Noval (the Axa Millésimes Portuguese wine estate) as well as managing director of Quinta da Romaneira, a position he already held under the ownership of IDI,’ Wine Bankers, the Paris investment specialist which oversaw the deal, confirmed.

by Adam Lechmere - As unrest returns to South African vineland, Wines of South Africa says the wine industry is not at present involved.
Su Birch, CEO of Wines of South Africa, told Decanter.com she knew of no striking workers nor workers who had made demands, and that unrest was confined to areas of table grape and other fruit production.
This is despite well-publicised statements from COSATU, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, and another organisation called the Black Association of the Wine and Spirits Industry saying that strikes would continue, and calling for international boycotts of South African fruit.
Cosatu regional secretary Tony Ehrenreich said last week the strikes would continue until demands, including a minimum daily wage of R150 (£11), and ‘coherent land reforms’ were met.

Die österreichische Weinwirtschaft konnte im abgelaufenen Jahr trotz knapper Vorräte die Exportmenge halten und die Weinerlöse sogar noch weiter steigern. Dies zeigen die vorläufigen Exportzahlen der Statistik Austria und der Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM), die im Jahr 2012 einen Gesamtexport von 46 Mio. L zu einem Exporterlösvon 128,5 Mio. € ausweisen. Aufgrund der Weinknappheit kam es im Inland zu Marktanteilsverlusten im Billigpreissegment. Dies wurde sowohl im In- als auch im Ausland durch Zugewinne in höheren Preisklassen kompensiert.
Das Volumen der österreichischen Weinexporte wird trotz der guten Ernte 2011 nicht markant steigen, weil durch den Spätfrost vom 18. Mai die Erntemenge 2012 bei der Hauptsorte Grüner Veltliner nach 2010 erneut kritisch niedrig ausfiel. Diese sich bereits im Frühjahr abzeichnende Weißweinknappheit führte zu anhaltend hohen Fassweinpreisen und Beschaffungsengpässen in den unteren Preisklassen bis 2 €. Durch Zuwächse in höheren Preisklassen konnten andererseits die Exporterlöse weiter gesteigert werden. Dies zeigen die vorläufigen Zahlen der Statistik Austria (I-IX 2012) und Hochrechnungen der ÖWM (auf Basis X-XII 2011). Sie gehen von einer Gesamtexportmenge von 46 Mio. L zu einem Gesamtexporterlös von 128,5 Mio. € aus. Markant ist auch der weiterhin niedrige Anteil der Fassweine mit nur mehr 8 Mio. L. Damit konnten die heimischen Winzer den Durchschnittspreis aller Exporte weiter auf 2,79 €/L erhöhen.

by Jim Budd - Collapsed wine investment company Vinance plc owed £5m-worth of wine to its 1,300 clients when it went into administration, according to administrators.
Vinance plc was placed in administration last November. However, the business has an estimated deficiency of £2.37m, thanks to a ‘large’ amount of wine owned by Vinance with an estimated value of £3m.
The report from Herron Fisher, the administrators of the company, shows that Vinance’s records were ‘incomplete’ and ‘inadequate’ and that the directors had no idea of the true position.
