by Courtney Humiston in Sonoma - Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Sonoma announced last Monday that it has purchased Geyser Peak Winery in Geyserville.
Francis Ford Coppola Winery said it had bought the production facility and 13ha of estate vineyards in order to meet its growing production demands.
‘Last year we found ourselves in a pinch with space,’ director of winemaking Corey Beck said. ‘With the lack of new winery development in Sonoma County and new vineyard plantings… the fruit has to go somewhere.’ The Geyser Peak facility, founded in 1880, had been owned by investment group EPR properties since 2008.
The Geyser Peak brand and label changed hands in 2012 and is now owned by the Australia-based company Accolade Wines. Accolade will continue to lease space in the winery from Coppola

According to the Cava Consejo Regulador, producers sold over 161m bottles to foreign markets in 2012 – a 6% increase over 2011. In contrast, 81m bottles were sold in Spain in 2012, a 6% fall from the 87m figure recorded in 2011. The high Spanish level of unemployment and economic crisis are cited as the main culprits.
However, the Consejo reported an overall Cava sales rise of 1.5% – 243m bottles in total were sold in 2012, as opposed to 239m in 2011. Patrice Lesclaux, export manager for Castillo Perelada in Emporda said that Cava was increasingly seen as a ‘must have’ listing for distributors worldwide.
‘Today, almost all relevant wine importers around the world want to have at least one Cava in their portfolio, as the consumer appreciates Cava for its optimal value for money’, he said. Germany is currently Cava’s most important foreign market: in 2012 over 39m bottles were sold to German importers. www.decanter.com

Zum zwölften Mal wurde heute der „Nachwuchssommelier des Jahres“ auf der ProWein in Düsseldorf gekürt. Die Jury konnten Florian Richter aus Leimen, der den ersten Platz belegte, sowie die Zweit- und Drittplatzierten Sebastian Schütz aus Würzburg und der Hamburger Torsten Junker überzeugen.
Der Wettbewerb wird jährlich ausgeschrieben vom Sommelier Magazin und dem Verband der Deutschen Sommelier-Union in Kooperation mit der Hotelfachschule Heidelberg und der Deutschen Wein- und Sommelierschule in Koblenz.
„Ein verdienter Sieg“ urteilte die Jury, die den jungen Florian Richter zum Nachwuchssommelier 2013 kürte.

Die Weinherstellung ist im vergangenen Jahr weltweit um fünf Prozent auf 250,9 Millionen Hektoliter zurückgegangen. Größter Verlierer in Europa mit einem Minus von 17 Prozent ist Frankreich. Mit 42,2 Millionen Hektolitern kann das Land aber seinen Platz als wichtigstes Weinanbauland knapp vor Italien (40,1) verteidigen. Das gab die Internationale Organisation für Rebe und Wein (OIV) am Donnerstag in Paris bekannt.
Für Deutschland berechneten die Experten dagegen einen Zuwachs von vier Prozent auf 9,5 Millionen Hektoliter. Internationaler Gewinner ist Chile, das seine Produktion um 20 Prozent auf nunmehr 12,6 Millionen Hektoliter steigern konnte.
Obwohl Länder wie Chile, China oder die USA aufholten, produzierten Frankreich, Italien und Spanien zusammen immer noch etwa die Hälfte der weltweiten Weinmenge. OIV-Generaldirektor Federico Castellucci sprach dennoch von einem «schwierigen Jahr» besonders für Europa. Sorgen bereitet ihm der Rückgang der Anbaufläche in der EU.
Von 2009 bis 2011 seien 269.000 Hektar für den Weinbau verloren gegangen, die dreifache Größe der Anbaugebiete in Deutschland. «Zu wenig Fläche lässt die Preise steigen und schwächt Europa im Konkurrenzkampf um bestimmte Märkte», warnte Castellucci. (dpa)

By Jane Anson in Bordeaux - Mathieu Cuvelier, owner of Chateau Clos Fourtet, is to finalise in the next few weeks the purchase of three further Saint Emilion properties.
Sophie Fourcade did not want to sell to a ‘faceless insurance company’
The properties are Chateau Clos St Martin (1.3 hectares), Les Grands Murailles (1.ha) and Cote de Baleau (14ha).
All three are owned by Sophie Fourcade, who was a practicing lawyer before joining the family wine business in 1998.
All three are Saint Emilion classified estates; the vines of Les Grands Murailles are next door to those of Clos Fourtet.
Fourcade is to continue as director of the properties after the purchase, as is the rest of the technical team, including Michel Rolland as consultant, Decanter.com understands. Stéphane Derenoncourt is consultant at Clos Fourtet.
