by Chris Mercer – Brazil could be about to see a rise in sales of wine from Napa Valley, after the country agreed to recognise the California wine region’s Geographic Indication status.Sales of US wine to Brazil are already growing strongly, albeit off a low base, and GI status gives wineries in Napa Valley a further boost in the country.
‘This is another important milestone for our trade group in protecting our appellation’s name from fraudulent use in yet another high-profile, emerging wine market,” said Linda Reiff, executive director of Napa Valley Vintners (NVV), a trade body representing 430 wineries.

by Chris Mercer – US billionaire says Christie’s got away with a ‘hoax’ after appeals court rejects his bid to sue.
US billionaire William Koch has continued to lambast Christie’s over the Jefferson wine sale ‘hoax’, despite losing another court battle to sue the auction house.
Koch has seen his bid to sue Christie’s quashed for a second time in the space of two years. The US Court of Appeals in Manhattan upheld an earlier ruling that Koch did not take legal action soon enough.
The case relates to the now infamous Jefferson wines, a cache discovered in a bricked-up Paris cellar in the 1980s, including Lafite and other notable Bordeaux names. They supposedly belonged to the late Thomas Jefferson

by Jane Anson in Bordeaux -Lord Norman Foster has designed new cellars for Bordeaux’s Chateau Margaux.
Lord Norman Foster, architect of the Reichstag in Berlin and Millau Viaduct in France, is to create new cellars for 1855 1st Growth Chateau Margaux.
Lord Foster will create an underground bottle library for past vintages, and a new vinification cellar that will allow both the red and white wines to be made in the same part of the estate for the first time since the late 1970s.
British-born Foster, a winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize Laureate, is perhaps the best-known architect to date to take on a Bordeaux winery. Earlier projects include Jean Nouvel‘s new winery at Chateau La Dominique in Saint Emilion and Christian de Portzamparc’s celebrated new cellars at Chateau Cheval Blanc.

An 170 Ständen auf den Weinschiffen können wieder gegen 4‘500 Weine aus allen wichtigen Anbauregionen der Welt degustiert und verglichen werden. Als Ergänzung dazu präsentieren sich im Forum-Zelt auf der Bürkliplatz-Terrasse verschiedene Weinregionen.
Das Interieur des Forum-Zeltes wurde mit einer bequemen Lounge ausgestattet. Die Region Bordeaux, die Winzerinnen und Winzer des Kantons Zürich, die Waadtländer Weine, das Weinland Frankreich und die Region Rioja bieten hier an verschiedenen Tagen Informa-tionen und freie Degustationen an. Daneben gibt es im WeinForum wieder Seminare und Vorträge zu spannenden Themen.
